Whitehouse Cheers Pullback of Offshore Drilling Plan

Statement

Date: April 26, 2019
Location: Providence, RI

U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and co-founder of the Senate Oceans Caucus, today released the following statement on the Trump administration's decision to put on hold plans to open American coastline to offshore drilling:

"The Trump Administration's foolish offshore drilling proposal poses a risk to our economy that has united coastal Democrats and Republicans in opposition. It is welcome news that the Administration has acknowledged that their plan doesn't stand up to legal rigor, but I won't stop fighting to protect Rhode Island's coastline until the offshore drilling proposal is fully abandoned."

Whitehouse authored the bipartisan New England Coastal Protection Act, which would bar offshore drilling along the New England coast. Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI) introduced the bill in the House.
